“Nobody Will Know”: What UAE Banks Actually Report About You, and to Whom

By nAlyze • September 22, 2026
CRS Reporting

It is still offered as advice, usually quietly and usually by someone selling a structure: open the account here, and nobody back home finds out. That was arguable a decade ago. CRS reporting in the UAE has been live since 2018, and the machinery is more specific than most people expect.

The Legal Machinery Already Exists

Two regimes run in parallel. The Common Reporting Standard was implemented by Cabinet Resolution No. 93 of 2021, with the mechanics in Ministerial Resolution No. 134 of 2021. FATCA operates separately under the bilateral UAE–United States agreement of 17 June 2015, capturing US persons by citizenship as well as residence.

The UAE exchanges with more than 100 partner jurisdictions and adopted the widest available approach: reporting covers tax residents of anywhere other than the UAE itself. Both regimes are administered through the Ministry of Finance.

What Actually Leaves the Country

Not a vague notification. A structured record containing your name and address, every jurisdiction in which you are tax resident, your taxpayer identification number, date of birth, account number, the institution holding it, the year-end balance, and the income or gross proceeds credited.

The timetable is fixed: institutions register by 31 March, file by 30 June for the previous calendar year, and the Ministry exchanges internationally by 30 September. The rules are published in the OECD guidance notes for the UAE.

You are not told. No notification, no copy, no chance to review the file before it leaves. The first you would know is a letter from a tax authority that already has the numbers.

A Company Does Not Hide You

This is where the offshore pitch fails hardest. Where an entity is a passive non-financial entity; the position for most holding companies, SPVs, foundations and trusts reporting looks through it, and the controlling persons are reported by name, address, tax residence and TIN.

The structure is reported. So are you.

The Form That Decides Everything

The self-certification you signed when the account was opened determines which countries receive your data. It is not a formality:

  • You must declare every jurisdiction in which you are tax resident, not the most convenient one
  • A treaty tie-breaker does not shorten that list. Treaties allocate taxing rights; they do not edit your CRS declaration
  • A UAE residence visa is not tax residence, and a Tax Residency Certificate confirms your UAE position without cancelling any other
  • A false self-certification is an offence, and stale records, an old home address, a foreign TIN never updated produce reports you did not expect

Most problems we see are not schemes. They are a form filled in years ago and never revisited. What tax residency actually turns on is covered in our guide to relocating to the UAE.

It Is Widening, Not Narrowing

From 2027 the scope extends under CRS 2.0 and the Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, bringing crypto exchanges, custodians and certain fintech and e-money providers into the same system. Any plan resting on disclosure easing is running against the direction of travel.

What Legitimate Planning Looks Like

None of this makes the UAE a worse place to do business. Low taxation here is lawful, deliberate policy, and using it is not evasion. The distinction is simple: a position built on real residency, real substance and accurate declarations survives examination. A position built on nobody looking is not a position at all.

We structure the first kind, and we tell clients plainly when what they are describing is the second. See our financial and tax advisory and corporate tax services, or our guide to 0% corporate tax on turnover up to AED 3 million.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do UAE banks report account information to my home country?

Not directly. UAE financial institutions report to the Ministry of Finance, which exchanges the data with the tax authorities of the jurisdictions where you are tax resident.

What information is reported under CRS reporting in the UAE?

Name, address, every jurisdiction of tax residence, TIN, date of birth, account number, the institution, the year-end balance, and income or gross proceeds credited to the account.

Does holding the account through a company stop it being reported?

No. Where the entity is a passive non-financial entity, which covers most holding companies, SPVs, foundations and trusts, the controlling persons behind it are reported alongside the entity.

Does a UAE residence visa make my account non-reportable?

No. A visa is an immigration status. If you remain tax resident elsewhere, that jurisdiction is still reportable, and a UAE Tax Residency Certificate confirms your UAE position without removing any other.

Will I be told if my account is reported?

No. There is no notification, no copy and no opportunity to review it beforehand. If you want to know what your bank holds about you, ask while the relationship is in good order.

Is using the UAE’s tax regime legal?

Yes. Establishing a genuine business here and paying tax under UAE law is entirely lawful. What creates exposure is inaccurate declarations or a structure with no real substance behind it.
