How to Open a Corporate Bank Account in the UAE (And Why Applications Get Rejected)
A trade licence can be issued in days. A corporate bank account can take weeks, and a meaningful share of applications are declined outright often without a stated reason.
The reason is rarely the company. It is that the bank could not build a file its own compliance team would defend to a regulator.
What the Bank Is Actually Assessing
Under the Central Bank of the UAE framework, every licensed bank must complete customer due diligence before onboarding. In practice the compliance team is answering four questions:
- Who ultimately owns and controls this company? Every beneficial owner above 25% must be identified and verified
- Where does the money come from, and where will it go? Source of funds, counterparties and geographies
- Does the stated activity match the licence, the premises and the contracts?
- What jurisdiction risk attaches to the shareholders and the trading partners?
A company that cannot answer these clearly is not judged incomplete. It is judged unexplainable, which for a compliance officer is the same as high risk.
Why Applications Get Rejected
- Activity mismatch; the licence says general trading, the business plan describes consultancy
- Vague business description with no named customers, suppliers or payment flows
- Opaque ownership; layered corporate shareholders, unattested parent company documents, incomplete UBO disclosure
- Shareholders resident in, or trading with, higher-risk jurisdictions
- No demonstrable UAE substance; a virtual address with no lease and no local presence
- Incomplete or expired documents; banks frequently do not ask twice
- High-cash or restricted business models, which attract enhanced due diligence
- Regulated activities without the sector registration the bank expects, such as real estate brokerage
What a Strong Application Looks Like
Assume the file will be read by someone who has never met you and cannot call you. It should contain the trade licence and incorporation documents, the memorandum of association, shareholder and director passports and Emirates IDs, proof of address, a full UBO declaration, the tenancy contract or Ejari, and evidence of real trading; signed contracts, purchase orders or invoices.
Add a one-page business rationale: what you sell, to whom, in which countries, how payments arrive, expected monthly volumes and the opening deposit. That single page resolves most of what compliance would otherwise have to guess. Clean financial reporting makes the projections credible rather than aspirational.
Timelines, Minimum Balances and Working Capital
Timelines vary widely. A complete file for a straightforward mainland company can move in days; free zone entities, offshore structures and non-resident shareholders commonly take several weeks. Minimum balance requirements typically range from around AED 25,000 for SME accounts to AED 500,000 for premium tiers.
That balance is not a fee, but it is capital removed from operations for as long as the account is open, which is why it belongs in your setup cost model rather than in a footnote.
If You Have Already Been Rejected
Do not resubmit the same file to another bank. Rejections are not always visible across institutions, but the weaknesses that caused the first decline will cause the second. Identify the failure point, fix it; licence amendment, clearer ownership documentation, a real lease, evidenced trading history and match the reapplication to a bank whose appetite fits your profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to open a corporate bank account in the UAE?
It depends on entity type and shareholder profile. Straightforward mainland applications with complete files can move quickly; free zone, offshore and non-resident cases commonly run to several weeks.
What is the minimum balance for a UAE corporate account?
There is no single figure. Requirements commonly range from around AED 25,000 for SME accounts to AED 500,000 for premium corporate tiers, and falling below the threshold usually triggers a monthly charge.
Can a non-resident open a UAE corporate bank account?
Yes, though scrutiny is higher. Expect stricter documentation on source of funds, a likely in-person meeting, and higher balance requirements than a resident-owned company would face.
Why was my application rejected without a reason?
Banks are generally not obliged to explain a compliance decision. The cause is usually documentary or structural; unclear ownership, activity mismatch, weak substance or unverified source of funds.
Can I use a personal account for business transactions?
No. A UAE company must transact through its own corporate account. Using a personal account creates regulatory exposure and undermines your bookkeeping and tax position.
