Relocating to the UAE as an Entrepreneur: What to Plan Before You Move

Getting the visa right and the tax position wrong is the expensive version of this move. That order is backwards. The two are not separate projects, they are one dependency chain, and until your own residency is issued you cannot sponsor anybody.

Here is the sequence, with realistic timelines attached to each stage.

How Long Each Stage Actually Takes

Stage Typical timeline What it unlocks
Trade licence issued Days to around two weeks Nothing yet on immigration
Establishment card (immigration file) Roughly one week The right to apply for visas at all
Your investor or partner visa Around two to four weeks Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, stamping
Your residency active — You become a sponsor
Dependants’ visas Around two to four weeks each Completed within 60 days of their entry

Plan for roughly two to three months start to finish, provided attestation began early. Attesting marriage and birth certificates in your home country is the longest lead time in the process and the one item you can start before anything else. Timelines vary by emirate, free zone and nationality, so treat these as planning ranges, not promises.

The Office Space Myth

You will read everywhere that your office size determines how many family members you can bring. It does not and the advice often comes from people earning a commission on the office they are recommending.

Two separate things get confused:

  • Premises drive the company’s visa quota. The size and type of your office sets how many establishment visas the company can hold, employment and partner or investor visas. A flexi-desk typically carries one or two, a real constraint once you start hiring
  • Your home drives family sponsorship. What immigration assesses for dependants is your residential accommodation: a registered tenancy contract in your name, and housing suitable for the family you are sponsoring

Buying more office space will not let you sponsor more children. It will let you hire more staff.

What Actually Governs Family Sponsorship

The published financial threshold is a minimum salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, per the UAE Government Portal. Alongside that:

  • Housing is assessed for suitability. In practice a studio generally supports a spouse, two bedrooms are expected to sponsor children, and three bedrooms to sponsor parents
  • Business owners do not prove income with a salary certificate; company documentation and financial records do that job, and the wrong evidence is a routine cause of delay
  • Marriage and birth certificates must be attested and in Arabic or certified translation, start this at home before you fly
  • Valid health insurance is required before stamping, and dependants aged 18 and over must pass a medical fitness test
  • Sons can be sponsored to 25, unmarried daughters with no age limit, children of determination without age restriction

One alternative is worth knowing: adult family members can join as employees of your company, drawing on the company quota instead of your home. Children under 18 cannot be employed, so they come on a dependant visa either way. Our visa and PRO services teams run these alongside company formation rather than after it, which is where months are saved.

Where the Golden Visa Changes the Maths

A 10-year Golden Visa is available through routes including AED 2 million in qualifying property, company capital or an accredited fund, with separate entrepreneur routes such as an incubator-approved project from AED 500,000. Thresholds move, so confirm your route with ICP or GDRFA. The advantage is sponsorship: Golden Visa holders face no salary threshold and cover broader family categories.

Residency Is Not Tax Residency

A residence visa is an immigration status. It is not a tax status, and the two are decided by different authorities under different rules.

UAE tax residency has its own tests, based on days present and where your home and interests genuinely sit, evidenced by a Tax Residency Certificate from the Federal Tax Authority. Your home country keeps taxing you until you break residence under its rules, a UAE visa does not do that for you. We cover what that means in our guide to 0% corporate tax on turnover up to AED 3 million.

Getting the visa right and the tax position wrong is the expensive version of this move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my office size affect how many family members I can sponsor?

No. Your office sets the company’s visa quota for employees and partners. Family sponsorship is assessed against your residential accommodation and your income, not your commercial premises.

How long does relocating to the UAE take?

Plan for roughly two to three months from licence to family residence visas, assuming attestation started early. The licence takes days, your own residency a few weeks, and dependants follow only once your residency is active.

Can I sponsor my family before my own visa is issued?

No. Your residence visa must be stamped and your Emirates ID active before you can sponsor anyone. This is the single biggest constraint on a family relocation timeline.

What size home do I need to sponsor my family?

Immigration assesses whether your accommodation suits the family being sponsored, evidenced by a registered tenancy contract in your name. In practice a studio generally supports a spouse, two bedrooms for children, three bedrooms for parents.

How long do I have to complete my family’s residence visas?

A sponsor has 60 days from the dependant entering on an entry permit to complete the residence visa. Missing it means restarting, at additional cost.

Does a UAE residence visa make me tax resident in the UAE?

Not automatically. Tax residency is assessed under separate criteria and evidenced by a Tax Residency Certificate. Your home country applies its own residence tests independently.
